I've been trying to cook outside a lot lately, with the glorious arrival of decent weather. I'm discovering that cooking over a campfire - anything more complicated than hot dogs on a stick - is actually pretty hard to do well, and very easy to do poorly. Of course a lot of the trouble is getting a good bed of coals, which really just means a combination of the right kinds of wood and patience. I should really just relegate it to the weekends because when I try on weekdays I'm too rushed and end up with soot-covered, pitch-tasting waste.

This salmon turned out okay flavor-wise, but had an unfortunate tinge of pitch due to using the wrong wood, and sooty, due to rushing the fire. The potatoes were similar...got to start wrapping them in foil. Thankfully the scotch was fine.

Oh well.

Hey at least it's May! Happy May Day everybody. I hope you have good weekend plans! It's almost Cinco de Mayo too, by the by.
